Every day, many of the nearly 2 million people behind bars are forced to live in inhumane, overcrowded jails and prisons and lack many basic needs.

Punishing people behind bars, denying their human rights, and exposing them to violence doesn’t create safety. We need to work together to end cruel and inhumane conditions in prisons and jails—and we need to start now.
